I decided that I didn't want expensive blinds that would collect dust and keep all the light out. I also spoke to a company making solar control glass, but retrofitting the lantern glass was beyond my budget and the supervisor at the manufacturer told me that the glass wasn't that effective! I came to the conclusion that there must be some other new technologies around that would solve the problem.
I did a bit of research and came across the microlouvres and I was happy to find that SmartLouvre® Technology was just down the road from me. The engineers at SmartLouvre® did a lot of technical analysis to make sure the bespoke screens would fit perfectly on the triangular and rectangular shapes of the glass lantern, and that they would be technically effective. With MicroLouvre® screens I would still have a perfect view of the clouds overhead, but the room would be a lot cooler in summer and still have all the light I needed. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a permanent, affordable and low-maintenance solution.
The screens have been up for a while now - we've had all types of weather including strong winds and the screens just sit there and do exactly what I wanted them to do. If I want to get up there and clean the windows I can just unhook the latch and lift the screen up. The SmartLouvre® Technology team have been great to work with - they keep in touch, they let me know exactly what they were going to do, and they have gone to a lot of trouble to get the technical specifications perfect for the unusual angles of the lantern. I am recommending SmartLouvre® microlouvres to friends and neighbours. With climate change already affecting our weather I feel very pleased that I have discovered and invested in a technical solution that is going to be effective year after year".
